Installation
- Site the box in the middle of the room, at least 7 ft (2.1 m) above the floor and 18 in (46 cm) from the walls, and confirm whether an existing box is fan-rated or a new one is needed.
- Install wood blocking between joists, or a concrete anchor for a slab ceiling, sized to the fan-rated box or brace-bar manufacturer's span, before the ceiling surface is closed up.
- Run and terminate the electrical wiring to the box, including any dedicated switch or neutral that the fan's remote or app control calls for.
- Finish the ceiling surface (drywall taping, primer, wallpaper) around the box opening.
- Mount the fan-rated box or brace bar to the blocking, joist, or anchor per its own instructions: teeth into joists for a retrofit brace, or timber screws/anchor bolts for a fixed bracket.
- Attach the fan's mounting bracket or downrod to the box, connect the fan's wiring leads per the maker's manual, then attach the blades and any light kit.
- Test rotation, the direction switch, and remote/app pairing before the canopy or ceiling cover is closed.

Does a gypsum-board (drywall) ceiling need reinforcement before a ceiling fan goes up?
Yes: NEC 314.27(C) and the box and brace makers covered here require the fan's support to be a listed fan-rated box or a brace bar/joist anchor, not the drywall itself, since a standard light-fixture box holds only a few pounds while a running fan adds constant dynamic load.
